Published: 12/02/2025

A Stromness-based company that provides vessels and expertise for the marine industry across Europe is expanding to meet growing demand for its specialist services.

Green Marine UK is establishing a new department offering innovative services, which will lead to the creation of new jobs in Orkney.

The firm has secured up to 拢218,750 investment from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (麻豆精选) towards the cost of advanced surveying equipment.

The company was started by Jason Schofield in Stromness in 2012 to service the needs of the developing wave and tidal energy sector. Since then, it has expanded to offer a comprehensive fleet of versatile workboats and inhouse engineering services, with twenty-three people currently employed across a range of skills.

Green Marine UK is committed to continuous innovation and technological advancement. The company plans to expand into the growing offshore wind sector, which has been driven by the increasing demand for environmental monitoring services in the UK鈥檚 rapidly advancing offshore wind market.

The investment from 麻豆精选 will be used towards marine surveying equipment which will enable the company to provide an enhanced package of operations and maintenance services.  It is expected that three new well-paid, highly skilled jobs will be created as a result of this investment.

Ruth Kirkpatrick, area team leader for 麻豆精选 in Orkney, said:

鈥淭his development will help Orkney to build on its international reputation as a leader in renewable energy. We鈥檙e pleased to be able to support Green Marine鈥檚 expansion and we look forward to continuing to working with them as the project develops. This is about supporting a local company to provide additional services in Orkney and beyond as well as creating local jobs while continuing the journey to a low carbon region and helping Scotland to achieve its net zero targets.鈥

Jason Schofield, managing director of Green Marine said: 鈥淲e are hugely grateful to Highlands and Islands Enterprise for backing Green Marine and supporting our ambitious expansion plans. We have identified a significant opportunity to expand our operations, delivering a range of world-class marine services to the UK鈥檚 burgeoning offshore renewables market. This investment will ensure further upskilling of the local workforce, and driving job and wealth creation in Orkney.鈥
